MaxRewards review
The only app that marks your credits used automatically — because it reads your transactions.
Card terms last verified against issuer pages on 2026-09-20.
MaxRewards is the one app here that answers "did I use that $300 dining credit?" without being told. It can do that because it signs in to your accounts and reads your statements. That is genuinely convenient, and it is the honest reason to consider it. It is also a structural trade that no amount of care on the vendor's side removes.
Weighted by the published rubric. Only benefit trackers are scored.
Required, stored, and there is no opt-out. Notably, MaxRewards does not use Plaid or MX — its help centre says it built "our own connector technology" precisely because aggregators cannot reach reward balances and credit scores. Credentials are encrypted under two separate keys held in databases at two different cloud providers, with the app reaching them only through a validating middleware layer. That is a serious design. It is still a working copy of your bank login, held by someone other than you.
Gold starts at $108/yr on a sliding scale, with a 7-day trial. Annual billing only — monthly was discontinued — so trying it means committing to a year. A Platinum tier with business expense tools exists; we could not confirm its current price from a primary source. No lifetime option.
Its own marketing claims 20+ issuers. We list the ones named explicitly; the total is the vendor's figure, not ours.
Beyond the basics
- Credit score monitoring.
- Transaction categorisation and spend analysis.
- Business tools including receipt matching, on the Platinum tier.
What it does well
- Automatic credit tracking is a real feature nothing else in this category has. Across a wallet of premium cards with a dozen recurring credits each, not having to remember is worth something.
- The broadest issuer coverage for offer activation of any app here, by a wide margin.
- Credit score monitoring, spend analysis and transaction categorisation come along with the connection.
- The credential handling is more carefully engineered than the category norm — split keys, separate cloud providers, middleware isolation. If you are going to store credentials, this is roughly how you would want it done.
Where it loses
- It needs a working copy of your bank logins and there is no way to use the app without that. Every one of its advantages traces back to that single decision.
- Because it does not use an aggregator, the usual reassurance — "the app never sees your credentials" — is not available here. It does see them.
- Issuers fight automated logins. Reviewers report re-authenticating with two-factor two to four times a month, worst on Chase and Amex.
- Some Chase customers report syncs triggering a fraud lock, shutting them out of their own bank account for days pending review. Uncommon, but what breaks is the bank account, not the app.
- Annual billing only and no lifetime tier, so the cost never stops.
- US cards only.
- The vendor's own figures, reproduced but not verified by us:
- 400,000+ members.
- Gold members earn an average of $662 from offers in their first year.
Verdict
Worth it only if you have decided, consciously, that hands-off tracking is worth handing a third party your bank credentials. That is a defensible choice. Making it without noticing you made it is not.
Buy it if
People who will not reliably mark credits by hand, and who accept the credential trade to avoid it.
Look elsewhere if
Anyone unwilling to have bank logins stored by a third party, and anyone with non-US cards.
